Fiber Arts Group
The first Saturday of every month, starting February 2, 2013.
@ 10:00a till Noon
This group is for those interested in gathering with like minded people, who do hand work with fibers, as well as those wishing to come together as a community. If you are interested in learning a new art form, then this group is for you, too!
What is Fiber Arts? Fiber arts is a form of arts and crafts that has to do with fibers (such as yarn, felt, wood, pine needles, raffia, etc.). Additionally, it can include modern fibers (such as paper or plastic bags, newspaper, flexible hose, wire., etc.) Some of the luxury fibers include angora, mohair and silk. If you find yourself to be more interested in the traditional fibers, you may prefer to work with cotton, linen or wool.
What types of projects does this entail? The arts of hand spinning, basket weaving, and some needle work (such as embroidery and needlepoint). You may even find a quilter or two there!
Did you just take one of our basket weaving classes? Why not come and join in with others, and continue your new love of this art?
A little about the person who is facilitating this group. Cathy Lampman started with fiber arts when her mom put a sewing needle in her hand and taught her to sew when she was five years old. She then began to embroider at age eight, to knit at age twelve, she made her first quit at age fifteen and made her first basket at age twenty-four. Cathy said that somewhere between the ages of twelve and fifteen, she also learned to crochet. If that wasn't enough for her, she taught herself to spin around 1990-1991. Cathy mentioned that the only thing she doesn't really know how to do is pottery. Perhaps that will be remedied soon!
Cathy has always done something with her hands, she says--and probably always will! Cathy's mother was born in 1913 and lived through the Depression with small children. Cathy's mother taught her that "the more you know, the more you can do. When you hit hard times, you will be able to support yourself, and the better off you'll be."
If you would be interested in attending one or more of the meetings for any of these interests, please give us a call to "pencil you in". Fiber Arts membership, per year is $10 Student, $20 Individual, $25 Family.
